My original N64 controllers still work without drift. None of my XBox One controllers have lasted much more than a year. That should count for something.
In Perfect Dark, connecting a second controller allowed you to hold one in each hand and control Joanna with a real dual stick setup.. THAT was groundbreaking for FPS..
When I first tried playing Mario 64, it was at a Blockbuster video and I couldn't figure out how to make Mario move. The D-pad didn't work! What the heck! But once I realized what the control stick was, I got used to it fast. It's not my favorite controller, but I think it was good one.
I found the controller quite uncomfortable, although it wasn't due to reaching for buttons. The first problem is that when holding it to use the analog stick, the back of your hand is squeezed between the handholds rather than loose. The second problem when using the analog stick is that the hands are not positioned evenly; your right hand is further forward than the left. It's just an awkward thing to hold.
