Video Game of the Year: A Year-By-Year Guide to the Best, Boldest, and Most Bizarre Games from Every Year Since 1977 is available now, and I spoke with the author about how it came to be.
I'm curious how the book handles games that were only released or well known in some territories, but still had a sizable influence on the gaming industry through that area, like Dragon Quest III. Or cases like Live A Live where the game wasn't a super major hit to my knowledge, but it influenced prominent creators like Toby Fox, we don't get Megalovania without Megalomania.
I got a little distracted by the Bayonetta 3 essay so have a tangent. I didn't like the ending but I appreciated the essay. My issue with the ending is less what happened and more that the narrative up to that point did not feel like the grand finale for Bayonetta. Like Bayonetta is pretty much destined to die in battle, but Singularity specifically was a terrible final enemy for her narratively and an especially poor villain in general.
This was awesome to read - I love the book! I carry it in my bookstore
