I always like the way you go in-depth even with “lesser” games. But GB and GBC are still big blind spots for me outside of your articles (and the major franchises). Any pre-GBA must plays you can think of that you haven’t written up yet?
Since you excused major franchises, I might have entered completely unknown territory with those systems for the most part by now. I tend to write GB/GBC titles up fairly quickly after playing them! But more will be on the way. Maybe not this year, since I've got a theme month in November and December is like half end-of-year stuff? But it'll happen.
Nice. Yeah, that was probably a poor choice of words by me. Metal Gear is a major franchise but I don’t think I even knew there was a GBC game before you wrote it up (and it was awesome). I was thinking more of the Pokemon/Mario/Zelda-level behemoths.
They're real close for me, because it does some things better (acknowledging that the sprites and hit boxes are a problem with health pickups, adding levels for bosses 4-8) but then does other things worse. I think I'm mostly just happy to be able to move on to III and see what's going on there.
Great points about the improvements—felt more pointless by the time I was playing it, but as you wrote, the GB and NES user base didn't have complete overlap. It's very possible I would rather play Wily's Revenge than II if I had to slog through one today, but Wily's Revenge was more memorable for the one time I played each.
It's funny, this was my first-ever Mega Man game, so it definitely imprinted on me in certain ways. But I've never even been tempted to play this since the NES games became widely available (and NES Mega Man II is probably one of my all-time favs now)

I actually liked Wily’s Revenge better purely because it had original level design. This one definitely felt like it was for completionists only!
