The wild thing to me is that Uematsu wrote all the character themes first, and THEN assigned them to characters. But they’re still somehow perfect? What a soundtrack.
Even further evidence that the music was intertwined with the narrative and game as a whole, everything responded to everything around it and meshed together as needed.
I'm writing a comment on a thread with several accomplished authors so I apologize in advance. Several standout themes - if you happen to hear Zozo's theme in passing it will remain stuck in your ear for the rest of the day. I also really like the piano specific tracks in the coliseum and the music that plays when the moogle/imp comes out to give you an explainer. Also Jidoor's town-specific track.
You mentioned FFIV changing the expectation when it came to video game music and that soundtrack was formative for my experience as well - I remember recording the Tower of Zot and Battle with the 4 Fiends tracks on my boombox as a kid. Great piece.

What!
Such a great piece! FF6 is my all-time fav and the music is incredible. Thanks for digging into this aspect of it!

Great post!
Sebastian Deken's book with Boss Fight Books about the music of FFVI is a great companion piece to this.
