I bounced off Ys VIII (my first Ys game) after about thirty hours. I found it fun to play but also never felt compelled to play it and eventually realized I was playing it, in part, just to finish it.
I've been meaning to give the series another chance, so I'll probably pick one of the ones you listed here.
