Great read, Marc! And yeah, it's such an interesting bird, this initial version. It's more of a *driving* game than a racing one, which makes more sense when you take into account what the devs worked on before they broke away from releasing games under Accolade and retooled their ideas into TNFS: the first couple of Test Drive games.
Wow, $700 for a console in the early Nineties, and people whine about the PS5 Pro today? Very interesting. I also didn't know that NFS started as a 3DO game!
The Neo Geo had released a couple years earlier at $650, so there was a growing class of paying for the highest quality. Though it didn't quite work out for either of them as far as mass appeal goes.
